Being a 24 year old city girl, moving to Salt Lake was difficult till a friend took me to Shogun for a late night snack. While the streets were quiet, Shogun was packed with a young crowd. The stay warm roll and soft shell crab are AMAZING. You can tell that they use fresh quality fish which is important to a sushi fanatic. I personally love the traditional japanese feel of the place which you don't see anymore. And the japanese cartoons they play in the waiting room is fantastic! Shogun is a hidden SLC treasure that reminds me of my fav sushi spot in San Francisco. Those hipster would love this SLC hole in the wall sushi haven.

Pros: Happy Hour, Sushi, Unique

Cons: Parking

My boyfriend and I recently tried Shogun and love it and have gone back several times since. Every time the sushi is amazing (and i didn't even like sushi before), but the service is always sub par. Our first waitress was cold and condescending, and the second didn't check on us once. We had to flag her down to even get more water and to order more food. I'm not a complainer but when we order really hot sushi it would be nice to have some water to go along with it. My boyfriend and i are in our late teens however we both look younger so maybe they think we're just bum teens and we're not going to tip well. Well I tip on how good the service is no matter how good or bad the food is. So Shogun keep expecting sub par tips from us if we keep getting sub par service. Good service= good tips! But other than that, great sushi!

Pros: The sushi is amazing!

Cons: Service, parking on the weekends.

I love eating sushi and Shogun Is really good. They give you a traditional and authentic feel when you sit down. It's nice to sit at the bar as well. For all those bad reviews and complaining about spending too mucch!! What do you expect to pay when eating sushi? I mean come on, at least tip 20% when eating anywhere, don't go out to eat if you don't wanna pay the price

Pros: Great Food, Good and Authentic feel as if you were in Japan

Cons: nada

I am a sushi junkie. I cannot go much longer than 3 days without my fix. Because I could not afford to keep going to restaurants for my addiction, I took lessons from a personal friend and sushi chef from Suehiro. Now I can make quality, fresh sushi right at home...if I have the time. However, whenever I'm not making my own sushi, I go to Shogun. It's an intimate atmosphere for my husband and I (we go at odd hours when we can have a booth to ourselves) and by far the freshest fish for a reasonable price in the city. When we want to splurge, we go to the owner Takashi's other venture - aptly named Takashi, where the atmosphere is more trendy and busy. We're used to spening $77 for sushi for 2 people, but at Shogun we can get our favorite rolls (Stay Warm & Spicy Hamachi, both yellowtail), Sake, Salad, and Miso and try out a couple other rolls for under $50. Sounds like a deal to me!

Pros: Great Sushi, Leaves your wallet fat, cozy seating

Cons: Service can be slow, high turn-around

Service was kinda little slow! but it was worth for being wait! food was great! their fish is always fresh specially their salmon and hamachi! o yeah sometimes they have ikura! i think its the best ikura i ever had! i've went many sushi bars in slc but i never had ikura like shogun's! it didnt even had any fishy smell from the ikura or fishy taste! and their sushi cheffs are incredebly skilled! If u guyz wanna see how the real sushi chef makes sushi, so then i recommand you guyz to go to Shogun! XD

The only highlight here is they are open until 2am on weekends....also close to Takashi for when lines are too long of a wait there. It has a "fun" experience for some as they do have tables where you remove your shoes and set at low tables. The sushi is average and pricing is average - overall an Average place...not worth going out of the way for unless possibly you have kids and want to give them the experience. One of the best sushi places in town for taking kids and only option for going to at midnight....only two times I would go here.

Pros: OPEN LATE, fun experience, good for kids

Cons: average food and service can be slow

I eat alot of sushi, but have never found a favorite place. With all the options in the area, I like to try new places. So this was my first (and so definetly last) time at Shogun. What I first noticed is that it smelled of very stongly of cigarette smoke (thanks to the bar next door? thin walls and shared ventilation?) Someone was there to greet us and seat us in our awesome booth right away. We were quickly given our drinks. (only 1 kind of Sake ugh!) but not my requested water. Then 3 more times for no water. I finally stumbled into the hall and caught a chef, and was joined by two other tables asking for drinks too. He brought us two tiny cups of water. The food was all brought quickly and was great. The best philly roll I have ever had. But then no more waitress. We were there to visit, and wanted to order 4 more rolls, and more drinks, but it went on 25 minutes without seeing her at all. I was happily tipsy off my huge glass of sake and inclined to be easy going, but I was so thirsty for water that I started to feel headachy. We were all very hungry still but asked for the check, another 15 minutes later, and again no water...we were presented with a check that INCLUDED a 15% gratuity. (We were a party of 4-with two seperate checks). We were so angry that we were dumbfounded and ended up just paying and leaving. For $50 for two people it is not great to leave hungry and thirsty from a meal. Oh and to be forced to tip for the worst service I have ever had.

Pros: Great booths

Cons: Horrible customer service

We were very disappointed at our recent visit to Shogun. After waiting for 30 min, we got 2 out of 3 items we ordered but after 40 min, our kids are getting restless and we became worried and asked waitress to find out. she said she will go kitchen and find out. She came out and told us that they don't have that item. After making us wait more than 40 min and telling us that they don't have the item we ordered, I couldn't believe it. What to do with 2 starving children? Couldn't waitress find out earlier? She did not even apologize nor make effort to make up for it.

We went there for dinner. Sushi was great and service was prompt. We arrived at the restaurant 10 mins before they open. Because of cold weather outside, the owner invited us to wait inside at the lobby area... very nice and warm. Based on great experience, we went there again the day after. Service was rude... I mean I didn't even finish my last bite and waiter asked me "Are you ready for check?". We noticed that the owner was not there that night. Go figure. Sushi was always good, but avoid their noodle dishes. Noodle Soup was nowhere close to authentic Japanese. It tasted like chicken noodle soup to me.

Pros: Sushi, Location

Cons: , Poor Japanese dishes

It's our favorite restaurant. What I can't figure out is how one reviewer can go there and spend $77 for four! And then complain about it! If we fill up and have a couple of drinks, it's $100. Reasonable for quality like Shogun.

Pros: Great Food, Imaginative, Friendly

The location and interior won't wow anyone, but the sushi certainly will.  See the full editorial review.
