Editorial Review for Over the Counter Cafe – by Peter Behle
In Short
You can't miss the kitchen--it's right in the middle of the restaurant. You can see the care that's taken in the little things, like using fresh potatoes for the home fries. For breakfast, try the Western omelette filled with thick-sliced bacon, onions, green pepper and mushrooms, or steak served with two eggs. All breakfast entrees come with great home fries and toast. Lunch favorites include half-pound burgers and sandwiches, all for around $5.

One of the best locally owned and operated breakfast places in the city! The restaurant is run by the owners--a couple who personally supervise the place almost every day of the year. I love this place for three reasons: (1) Simple home-made food with top-quality ingredients. (2) A bright, friendly atmosphere. (3) Amazingly friendly and fast service. They serve eggs and pancakes with home made potatoes, fresh vegetables, perfectly crisp bacon, and real butter. The price range is in the middle-about $9 per person for coffee and breakfast. The breakfast steak or pork chops are a great value. The giant hamburgers are also great! The food is simple! The focus here is on fast, hot, fresh food. If you want something fancy, take the extra time to drive up to Ruth's Diner (another great place) but if you want BREAKFAST with a smile, go to Over-The-Counter!
Pros: best service in town, personally run by the owners
Cons: Only takes cash!

This isn't supposed to be a gourmet health-food place. It is what it is and I love that about it. It's folksy. If you don't like bacon and fat--order the oatmeal. It's great and comes with brown sugar and cream/milk. Love to come by myself, do a crossword puzzle and chat with whomever comes in!
Pros: Great breakfasts!
Cons: The ambience is what it is--"over the counter" In think that's a pro
