The Adopt-a-Highway program has operated in conjunction with the Don't Waste Utah campaign since 1988. Volunteer groups sign a contract to maintain an area of road at least three times a year over a two-year period. The area is marked by a road sign, noting the group's Adopt-a-Highway participation. All volunteers receive safety training before they are issued their pile of trash bags and bright orange vests.
